Flathead Lake Montana Area Guide

In the Northwest Corner of Montana, lies the largest natural freshwater in the western United States, Flathead Lake. Created by glaciers dating back to the Ice Ages, Flathead Lake now covers almost 200 square miles of Montana landscape. Flathead’s 160 miles of shoreline make the area ideal for water related activities as well as relaxing outings with friends and family. At its deepest, Flathead Lake is just about 300 ft, make the lake a thriving home for a variety of Montana freshwater, such as: lake trout, salmon, perch, pike, bass, whitefish and trophy winning Mackinaw. Several state parks and lakeshore communities have boat launches and marinas on the Lake, allowing residents and guests alike the enjoyment of this Montana wonder.

The Montana wonder of Flathead Lake would not have been if not for some chance happenings of Mother Nature. Flathead Lake formed within an area called the Rocky Mountain Trench, this natural trough runs from the Montana region into British Columbia and parts of the Yukon. And after thousands of years of melting ice from the moraines, glacier deposits that cause huge indentations in the earth, the Lake began to fill. Normally, water will find a way to make its way downhill, as water doesn’t prefer to stay in one place. When the water began its eroding journey across the land, it ran into a curious site, a massive pile of bedrock which halted the water’s further movement and created what is called today as the Kerr Dam. This cause the area of Flathead Lake to grow into the 30 mile long and 15 mile wide freshwater marvel that it is today, a marvel that residents of the surrounding area welcome all to experience as well.

Flathead Lake is easily accessible for all by means of two scenic highway drives, either on US Highway 93 or Route 35. These two entrance points allow travelers across Montana or even the country come and bask in the glory of Flathead Lake. The Lake is also closely situated to the Glacier National Park and the Big Mountain Ski Resort just to north, granting residents of the area access to other great Montana locales. Read on about more of Flathead Lake’s stunning features and engaging events in the additional sections provided here. Come see for yourself why Flathead Lake is a majestic part of the scenery that made Montana famous.
